Figure bets on manufacturing scale while BMW keeps humanoids on the line
Figure's factory buildout and BMW Spartanburg results framed humanoids as an automotive production tool, not a science fair.
By late May, Figure AI's story was manufacturing scale plus a verified BMW Group Plant Spartanburg pilot. BMW-linked reporting said Figure 02 supported tens of thousands of X3 vehicles, handled tens of thousands of sheet-metal parts, and logged more than a thousand operating hours with tight placement accuracy on welding fixtures.
Figure's BotQ production narrative pushed unit-per-hour ambitions and yield discipline. That is the other half of the humanoid race: can you build them cheaply enough to matter.
## Takeaway Automotive line-side work is a brutal test. If a robot can hit cycle time beside weld cells, warehouse tote moves look easier. Watch yield and service contracts next, not just walking gait clips.
