GPT-5.5 ships as Optimus converts Fremont from cars to robots
The same late-April window brought OpenAI's GPT-5.5 and Tesla's clearer plan to turn Fremont car lines into Optimus production.
Late April stacked two physical-world AI stories. OpenAI released GPT-5.5 with a push toward broader agentic work. On Tesla's April 22 earnings call, Musk reiterated that Optimus production would target the converted Fremont Model S and Model X area in late summer, after car output there ended.
