Space Force awards SpaceX $4.16B for airborne target tracking
SpaceX won a $4.16 billion Space Force contract to field a space-based network that tracks aircraft and missiles from orbit.
On May 29, SpaceNews reported that the U.S. Space Force awarded SpaceX $4.16 billion to build the first increment of a space-based Air Moving Target Indicator network. The constellation is meant to detect and track fighters, bombers, cruise missiles, and potentially hypersonic weapons, with early capability targeted around 2028 on Starshield hardware.
This is battlefield sensing moving off vulnerable aircraft and into proliferated orbit.
